Sing. Dance.
Move. Enlighten. These are what the right words can do, put in the right
order and the right combination. It's part art, part science, part sleight
of hand. You think the rabbit's here, but look! It's a hippopotamus.
Someone
once said that the difference between the right word and the almost
right word is like the difference between fire and firefly.
Moving
a pen across the page, tapping combinations of letters on a keyboard
that result in words that can be found in the dictionary: that's not
writing. That's spelling.
Writing
comes from the soul. If the writer is not moved or is false in their
writing, the reader or viewer will not be moved, and will find the lie.
Every time.
When people
ask what I do for a living, I am tempted to tell them that I put hippos
in top hats. And when I'm lucky I make them dance and sing.
